Agbarho East-West Road Collapse: Oborevwori Directs Julius Berger to Fix Failed Federal Highway

Following severe commuter hardship caused by torrential rainfall and heavy erosion, Delta State Governor, Rt. Hon. Sheriff Oborevwori, has ordered construction giant Julius Berger Nigeria Plc to immediately carry out emergency remedial works on the collapsed section of the East-West Road at Agbarho in Ughelli North Local Government Area.

The directive was disclosed in an official statement issued on Thursday in Asaba by the State Commissioner for Works (Rural Roads) and Public Information, Mr. Charles Aniagwu.

According to Aniagwu, the Governor took the proactive decision to step in—despite the East-West Road being a Federal Government asset—to cushion the severe hardship currently faced by commuters, local businesses, transport operators, and residents across the Niger Delta region.

‘People First Over Bureaucratic Boundaries’

Aniagwu explained that the sudden washing away of the Agbarho stretch by intense erosive forces had turned the vital interstate artery into a major bottleneck, paralyzing socio-economic activities.

“Governor Oborevwori’s action underscores our administration’s core philosophy: governance must be driven by the immediate welfare and daily needs of the people, rather than being restricted by bureaucratic boundaries,” Aniagwu stated.

He highlighted that the East-West Road remains the primary economic lifeline connecting several oil-producing states and communities across the Niger Delta, adding that any extended disruption on the corridor carries far-reaching economic consequences.

The Commissioner assured road users that Julius Berger, which is already executing landmark infrastructure projects across Delta State, would quickly mobilize to the site to execute quality remedial works, stabilize the failed portion, and restore smooth traffic flow.

Aniagwu noted that the intervention aligns directly with Governor Oborevwori’s MORE Agenda, which emphasizes meaningful development, continuous maintenance of critical infrastructure, and elevating the overall quality of life for Deltans.

While reassuring the public that the state administration will continue collaborating with relevant federal agencies and private sector partners, Aniagwu appealed to motorists and commuters to exercise extreme caution while navigating the Agbarho axis during the execution of the repair works.
