Abure-Led Labour Party Declares Readiness For 2027 Elections, Offers Free Forms To Aspirants

The National Chairman of the Labour Party, Barrister Julius Abure, has declared that the party remains fully prepared for the 2027 general elections despite the lingering leadership crisis, insisting that nomination forms are already being distributed free of charge to aspirants nationwide.

Abure made the declaration during a press conference in Abuja on Monday, where he also confirmed that the party had filed an appeal at the Supreme Court challenging the Appeal Court judgement on the Labour Party leadership tussle.

In what appeared to be a direct challenge to rival factions within the party, Abure announced that aspirants across the country had already begun picking nomination forms through official Labour Party platforms.

“Our forms are available and aspirants have been picking forms. All our forms can be accessed on all Labour Party social and online platforms for free,” he stated.

The Labour Party chairman described the free nomination initiative as part of the party’s ideology of making politics accessible to ordinary Nigerians who may not have huge financial resources but possess the capacity to win elections.

According to him, the party had adopted the same approach during the 2023 elections, which enabled grassroots candidates to emerge victorious in several constituencies.

“This is to make partisan politics easy and affordable for those who have the capacity to win elections but may not have huge funds to deploy into contests,” Abure said.

He further disclosed that the party’s governorship and State House of Assembly primaries would hold on May 27, 2026, while House of Representatives and Senate primaries are scheduled for May 29 through direct primaries across local government areas nationwide.

Abure also revealed that the Labour Party’s presidential candidate for the 2027 election would emerge through a consensus arrangement during a presidential primary in Abuja on May 29.

The Labour Party chairman accused certain forces of attempting to destabilise the party following its performance in the 2023 elections, alleging that the party had become a target for political victimisation.

According to him, the leadership under his chairmanship emerged legally from the March 27, 2024 National Convention held in Nnewi, Anambra State, adding that the process complied fully with party guidelines and the law.

Abure maintained that the party had already approached the Supreme Court to challenge recent court decisions affecting the party’s leadership structure.

“We have filed our notice of appeal, and we are waiting for the compilation of records so that we can properly file our brief at the Supreme Court,” he said.

He also criticised the faction led by Senator Nenadi Usman, describing their actions as illegal and inconsistent with the Labour Party constitution.

Despite the ongoing legal battle, Abure insisted that the party would continue all political activities ahead of 2027 and would not surrender its structure to what he described as “political merchants and buccaneers.”

He further denied allegations that the party leadership demanded money from Abia State Governor Alex Otti during reconciliation talks, insisting that discussions were centred strictly on unity and power-sharing arrangements.

“At no time was money discussed. Nobody demanded money and nobody offered money,” he added.

Abure expressed confidence that the Supreme Court would eventually resolve the leadership dispute in favour of his faction, while assuring party supporters that Labour Party remains committed to participating fully in the next general elections.
