‘I Became Rich by Luck’ — Tony Elumelu

Nigerian billionaire businessman and philanthropist Tony Elumelu has sparked conversations online after attributing a significant part of his success to luck.

Speaking during an interview with YouTuber Korty EO, Elumelu said wealth and success are not always determined by intelligence, strength, or hard work alone, stressing that luck can sometimes be a defining factor.

The Chairman of Heirs Holdings and founder of the Tony Elumelu Foundation acknowledged that while he worked hard throughout his corporate career, fortune also played a crucial role in shaping his journey.

“I am here because of luck. At times, you don’t become successful because you are the smartest, strongest or most energetic. Sometimes, luck plays a role, and I am a product of luck,” he said.

Despite highlighting the role of luck, Elumelu encouraged aspiring entrepreneurs to remain focused, resilient, and committed to their goals. He noted that challenges are inevitable in business and that consistency, determination, and a strong work ethic remain essential for overcoming obstacles.

His comments have since generated mixed reactions on social media, with many expressing surprise that a businessman widely celebrated for his achievements and entrepreneurial drive would credit much of his success to luck.
