BREAKING: FG Proposes Six Weeks for NYSC Orientation Programme
President Bola Tinubu has approved a comprehensive reform of the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC), introducing sweeping changes aimed at modernising the scheme, improving corps members’ welfare and strengthening its relevance to national development.
A key highlight of the reforms is the proposal for a redesigned six-week orientation programmewith greater emphasis on leadership, entrepreneurship, digital skills and specialised career development.
The President also approved a new operational structure that places the NYSC under civilian leadership, while the military will continue to provide security for corps members nationwide.
To pave the way for implementation, Tinubu directed the Attorney-General of the Federation, Lateef Fagbemi, and the Minister of Youth Development, Ayodele Olawande, to amend the NYSC Act and relevant regulations to reflect the approved reforms.
Other major reforms include a technology-driven call-up process, risk-sensitive deployment to enhance the safety of corps members, and skills-based primary assignments aligned with graduates’ academic backgrounds and career paths.
The reforms also provide for improved orientation camp standards through a national grading and certification system, alongside a new graduation ceremony that will replace the traditional Passing Out Parade.
In addition, the Federal Government plans to introduce a redesigned NYSC uniform to reflect professionalism, national pride and the evolving vision of the scheme.
The reforms are expected to reposition the NYSC for greater efficiency while equipping corps members with practical skills needed for employment, entrepreneurship and national development.
