Somtochukwu Maduagwu’s Killing a National Loss – Minister Idris
Minister of Information and National Orientation, Mohammed Idris, has described the killing of Arise TV anchor, Somtochukwu Christelle Maduagwu, as a national loss that has left the Nigerian media industry and the nation in deep grief.
In a condolence letter personally signed and addressed to Arise TV Chairman, Nduka Obaigbena, Idris expressed shock over the tragic death of the 29-year-old journalist, who was murdered during an armed robbery at her residence in Katampe, Abuja, on Monday, September 29, 2025.
“I write to convey our deepest condolences to you and the entire ARISE News family on the shocking and untimely death of your esteemed anchor, Ms. Somtochukwu Christelle Maduagwu, who by every account was a vibrant and dedicated news anchor, consummate lawyer, and a model of professionalism whose work resonated with audiences across Nigeria and beyond,” Idris said.
The minister lamented the “heinous act that cut down a promising young journalist in her prime”, stressing that her death was a grievous loss not only to Arise News but also to the Nigerian media fraternity and the entire country.
He assured that the Federal Government fully supports the ongoing police investigation into her death and pledged that justice will be served.
Idris extended his sympathies to Maduagwu’s family, colleagues, and loved ones, praying for strength and fortitude to bear the painful loss.
Maduagwu, a lawyer and former beauty queen, joined Arise News in 2024 and was known for her passionate advocacy for women’s rights and education. Her tragic death has sparked widespread outrage and renewed calls for improved security across Nigeria’s capital.
