BREAKING: FG Drags Sowore, Meta, X to Court Over Alleged Anti-Tinubu Post
The Federal Government has filed fresh charges against human rights activist and Sahara Reporters publisher, Omoyele Sowore, over alleged false social media posts targeted at President Bola Ahmed Tinubu.
According to court filings, Sowore will be arraigned on a five-count charge alongside Meta Platforms Inc. (owners of Facebook) and X Corp (owners of Twitter/X) at the Federal High Court in Abuja.
The charges stem from a post allegedly made by Sowore on his verified X handle on August 25, 2025, where he wrote, “This criminal @officialABAT actually went to Brazil to state that there is no more corruption under his regime in Nigeria. What audacity to lie shamelessly!”
Prosecutors argue that the post was deliberately intended to incite public disorder and discredit the presidency, in violation of Section 24(2)(b) of the Cybercrimes Prohibition and Prevention Act, 2024.
The government maintains that Meta and X, as platform owners, also bear liability for allegedly failing to moderate or remove the offending content.
Sowore, a former presidential candidate and long-time critic of the Nigerian government, has not yet issued an official statement on the charges. Rights groups, however, have already raised concerns that the case could set a precedent for limiting freedom of expression and digital rights in Nigeria.
The matter has been scheduled for hearing at the Federal High Court, Abuja, with the arraignment expected to commence in the coming days.
