Resident Doctors Extend Strike Notice, Give FG Four Weeks to Meet Demands
Resident doctors in Nigeria have extended their strike ultimatum by an additional four weeks, giving the Federal Government more time to address lingering issues affecting the country’s healthcare sector.
The extension follows ongoing engagements between the doctors and government authorities, with key demands on welfare, remuneration and working conditions yet to be fully resolved.
The doctors had earlier threatened industrial action over concerns including improved funding for healthcare institutions, prompt payment of salaries and allowances, and better working conditions for medical personnel.
According to the association, while discussions with the government are ongoing, progress has not been sufficient to address their concerns, prompting the decision to extend the ultimatum and allow room for further negotiations.
The development has renewed concerns among patients and healthcare stakeholders over the possibility of a nationwide strike if the outstanding issues remain unresolved after the four-week extension.
The resident doctors urged the Federal Government to act swiftly to meet their demands and avert a disruption of healthcare services, stressing that the welfare of health workers is critical to sustaining quality healthcare delivery across the country.
