Punch Newspaper Delta Correspondent Dies at 43, Oborevwori Condoles NUJ


Delta State Governor, Rt. Hon. Sheriff Oborevwori, has expressed deep sorrow over the death of Punch Newspaper Delta State Correspondent, Mr. Matthew Ochei, who passed away at the age of 43.

Ochei, a native of Ukunzu in Aniocha North Local Government Area of Delta State, reportedly died in the early hours of Tuesday, January 6, 2026, after a brief illness, throwing the journalism community in the state into mourning.

In a condolence message signed by his Chief Press Secretary, Sir Festus Ahon, Governor Oborevwori described the late Punch correspondent as a dedicated, courageous, and principled journalist whose work significantly contributed to public enlightenment and the strengthening of democratic accountability.

The governor commiserated with the Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ), Delta State Council, members of the media, and the Ochei family, noting that the loss was not only personal but a major setback to ethical journalism in the state.

“This is a deeply painful moment for Delta State and the Nigerian media industry. We have lost a fearless and committed journalist who discharged his duties with integrity, professionalism, and an unwavering commitment to truth,” Oborevwori said.

According to the governor, Ochei’s dedication to responsible journalism earned him respect among colleagues and stakeholders across the media landscape, particularly through his reporting for Punch Newspaper.

“His untimely death is a heavy blow to his family, the NUJ, and the entire media community. His voice, courage, and professionalism will be greatly missed,” the governor added.

Governor Oborevwori extended heartfelt condolences to the immediate family, friends, and colleagues of the deceased, praying that God grants them strength and comfort to bear the irreparable loss.

“Our thoughts and prayers are with the Ochei family and the Nigeria Union of Journalists at this difficult time. May Almighty God grant his soul eternal rest and give his loved ones the fortitude to endure this painful loss,” he said.

The governor further assured the NUJ and media practitioners in Delta State of the government’s solidarity and support as they mourn the passing of one of their own.
