NYSC Threatens Employers Over Poor Welfare of Corps Members
The National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) has warned that employers who fail to provide accommodation or transport support for corps members risk being blacklisted, as the scheme intensifies efforts to improve the welfare of serving graduates.
The warning followed the 2025 NYSC/Corps Employers’ Workshop held in Bauchi, where the Director-General of the scheme, Brigadier General Olakunle Nafiu, stressed that employers have a statutory responsibility to support corps members posted to their organisations.
Represented by the Director of the NYSC Northeast Area Office I, Agatha Banki, the DG urged employers to either pick up corps members from orientation camps or refund their transportation costs if they are unable to do so.
He also emphasised the need for employers to provide decent accommodation or pay an allowance in lieu of accommodation, noting that such support would boost corps members’ morale and improve service delivery.
According to Nafiu, employers are also expected to provide healthcare services where available to regular staff and maintain a safe and conducive working environment for corps members throughout their service year.
The NYSC said employers who consistently fail to meet these welfare obligations, including those that reject corps members or refuse to provide the required support, could be blacklisted from participating in the scheme in the future.
The scheme added that strengthening collaboration between NYSC and corps employers remains essential to achieving its nation-building objectives while ensuring corps members are adequately supported during their service year.
