Nnamdi Azikiwe Airport Becomes Nigeria’s First Fully Cashless Terminal
The Federal Government has officially declared the Nnamdi Azikiwe International Airport (NAIA), Abuja, as Nigeria’s first fully cashless airport, marking a major leap in the country’s aviation modernization drive.
The move is part of the Federal Airports Authority of Nigeria’s (FAAN) nationwide rollout of its “Operation Go Cashless” initiative, aimed at improving transparency, efficiency, and passenger convenience across all airports in Nigeria.
Speaking at the official launch in Abuja on Sunday, FAAN Managing Director and Chief Executive, Mrs. Olubunmi Kuku, described the development as “a pivotal moment in modernising Nigeria’s aviation sector.”
She noted that the initiative represents more than just a technological upgrade but also “a fundamental enhancement of the passenger experience.”
Kuku announced that effective September 29, 2025, FAAN began phasing out all physical cash transactions at its revenue points across airports, including access gates, car parks, and VIP lounges.
“For our passengers, this means faster, more secure transactions and an end to the delays of cash handling,” she said.
“It is a direct response to your call for modern, efficient, and world-class service.”
At the event, FAAN also unveiled the FAAN Contactless Airport Card, a unified payment solution that allows seamless, cash-free transactions at all FAAN-managed airports.
According to Kuku, the card offers several key features, including:
- A single wallet for multiple registered users
- Instant transaction notifications
- An online dashboard for account management
- The ability to block lost or stolen cards immediately
“This technology is not only fast and convenient but also promotes enhanced hygiene. Your security is our priority,” Kuku added.
She explained that the cashless operation will boost financial accountability, ensure traceable transactions, and align Nigeria’s aviation sector with global digital standards.
“This initiative is a cornerstone of our strategy for enhanced accountability and sustainable revenue growth. It strengthens Nigeria’s position as a ready partner for international business,” she said.
The FAAN boss commended the Commercial and Business Development Directorate, led by Ms. Adebola Agunbiade, for driving the project despite initial challenges. She expressed optimism that the system would soon record its first “billion naira collected digitally.”
Kuku also appreciated President Bola Ahmed Tinubu and the Minister of Aviation, Festus Keyamo, for their unwavering support toward achieving a transparent and technologically advanced aviation sector.
“This is a new era for FAAN, defined by technology, driven by efficiency, and dedicated to serving you better,” she declared.
