Nations League Final: Fan Dies After Falling from Stands During Portugal-Spain Clash
A tragic incident marred the Nations League final between Portugal and Spain in Munich on Sunday, as a fan died after falling from the stands during the match, UEFA confirmed to AFP subsidiary SID.
The supporter reportedly fell from the central tier into the press box located in the lower tier during the first period of extra time. The fall, estimated to be around eight metres, prompted an immediate response from paramedics and police who rushed to the scene to provide assistance.
A UEFA spokesperson acknowledged the incident as a “medical emergency” and confirmed that a fan had “sadly” died during the game.
Representatives from both national teams expressed their condolences following the heartbreaking event. The match, which ended 2-2 and was decided by penalties in Portugal’s favour with a 5-3 scoreline, was overshadowed by the fatal accident.
Spain coach Luis de la Fuente addressed the tragedy during his post-match press conference, stating:
“I want to show my deepest condolences because a fan has died. It reminds us of what is important in life.”
A representative of the Portuguese team shared a similar sentiment, saying the incident “casts a shadow on our victory today.”
Portugal coach Roberto Martinez also commented on the news, calling it “extremely sad news.”
