Victor Boniface’s Super Eagles Retirement Post Was Just a Joke — Report
Bayer Leverkusen striker Victor Boniface was only “catching cruise” when he appeared to announce his retirement from international football.
According to PUNCH, a close source to the player revealed this during an interview with PUNCH Sports Extra.
The 24-year-old forward had stirred speculation among Nigerian football fans last week following a now-deleted social media post that suggested he was walking away from the national team after Nigeria’s 1-1 draw against Russia in an international friendly.
“Proud to play for my country, and a dream for me also. Really enjoyed every moment — the good and the bad. Thanks a lot. Thank you all. I don hang boot,” Boniface had written.
However, amid the controversy and confusion the post generated, a close confidant of the striker clarified that it was never meant to be taken seriously.
“He was just cruising the way he does,” the source said.
“Boniface didn’t mean any of that. He must have seen the reaction that followed it and he deleted it as well. He has just started, and the aim is to achieve something with Nigeria.”
So far, Boniface has made 13 appearances for the Super Eagles, providing one assist but yet to open his goal account.
At club level, the striker featured in 19 Bundesliga matches last season, recording eight goals and two assists, despite enduring spells on the sidelines.
