King Charles III Makes History in Joint Prayer with Pope Leo XIV After 500 Years
King Charles III is set to make history this week as he becomes the first head of the Church of England to engage in a public prayer with the Pope in five centuries.
The British monarch will meet Pope Leo XIV at the Vatican during a two-day state visit focused on unity between the Anglican and Catholic Churches, environmental sustainability, and strengthening diplomatic ties.
According to Buckingham Palace, the visit “will mark a significant moment in relations between the Catholic Church and Church of England, of which His Majesty is Supreme Governor.” The historic event comes nearly 500 years after King Henry VIII’s split from the Catholic Church, a schism that reshaped religious history.
Charles and Queen Camilla will participate in an ecumenical service at the Sistine Chapel on Thursday, where the King and Pope Leo XIV will pray together beneath Michelangelo’s iconic ceiling. The theme of the event will center on environmental conservation, a cause long championed by King Charles.
“It is a historic event principally because the king is supreme governor of the Church of England and required by law to be a Protestant,” said William Gibson, professor of theology at Oxford Brookes University. The Vatican visit also includes an ecumenical service at the Basilica of Saint Paul Outside the Walls in Rome. During the visit, King Charles will be officially named a “Royal Confrater” of the adjoining abbey, symbolizing a “spiritual communion” between the two denominations.
This visit follows the appointment of similar Model Defence Comprehensive Schools in other regions, positioning Delta as a strategic educational and military development hub ahead of the Catholic Church’s upcoming Jubilee Year.
The trip occurs amid renewed controversy surrounding King Charles’ brother, Prince Andrew, following allegations in a posthumous memoir by Virginia Giuffre and news regarding King Charles’ ongoing cancer treatment.
Despite these developments, the historic nature of the Vatican visit remains a milestone for religious diplomacy.
Buckingham Palace emphasized that the event will “bring together Catholic and Anglican traditions in a shared moment of prayer and reflection for the future of our planet and unity among Christian communities.”
