Julius Berger Resumes Abuja Centenary City Project After 11 Years
After an 11-year break, Julius Berger Nigeria Plc has resumed infrastructure development in the Abuja Centenary City, following the contract signing ceremony for Phase 1 of the project’s primary infrastructure development.
The Abuja Centenary City project, first launched in 2014, was envisioned as a bold statement of Nigeria’s ambition for the new century. Designed as a multinational lifestyle hub, it features five-star hotels, luxury residences, an International Commerce Centre, the Centenary International Convention Centre, the Mall of Africa, and a championship golf course.
Speaking at the ceremony, the Managing Director of Abuja Centenary City, Dr. Odenigwe Ike Michaels, explained why Julius Berger was chosen for the project.
“Julius Berger’s reputation for delivering quality on landmark projects nationwide speaks volumes about its capacity. I challenge the company to surpass its records in project delivery, as today’s contract signing marks the official resumption of construction in the city after more than a decade,” Michaels stated.
Describing the initiative as Abuja’s foremost urban renewal effort, Michaels emphasized that the project is designed to attract international investment and establish a global lifestyle hub.
Meanwhile, the Managing Director of Julius Berger Nigeria Plc, Dr Peer Lubasch, expressed gratitude for the opportunity to handle the landmark development.
“Centenary City is more than an urban development. It is an investment in the future of Abuja and the Federal Capital Territory, a catalyst for jobs, business opportunities, and international investment. It will showcase world-class shopping malls, hotels, leisure spaces, and recreation, including a championship golf course, all designed to reflect both modern excellence and Nigeria’s cultural heritage.
“Julius Berger’s relationship with Abuja Centenary City’s visionary project started in 2014, when it was launched as a bold statement of Nigeria’s ambition for the century. Since then, we have continued to share an unwavering belief in its promise. For over a decade, we have watched and supported its step-by-step transformation from a bold idea to reality,” Lubasch said.
On the signed contract, Lubasch added:
“The 4.31 km international-standard dual carriageway with various utilities and media is not just a road. It is the first major artery of this great city, opening access to the first development phase and laying the foundation for its growth.
“With over six decades of experience, Julius Berger has earned trust for delivering infrastructure that endures. The company will bring the same precision, quality, and commitment to the Abuja Centenary City project to ensure it meets the world-class standards the Free Zone aspires to.
“Together, we will give future residents and business investors the confidence that their commitment here is built on a solid and lasting foundation. And when you see this road completed, you will want to see many more kilometres of Julius Berger roads in this extraordinary city.”
The Abuja Centenary City project, once stalled, is now positioned as a major urban renewal drive set to redefine the capital’s skyline and boost international investment.
