‘I Will Quit’ – Guardiola Threatens Manchester City
Manchester City manager Pep Guardiola has issued a stern warning to the club’s hierarchy, declaring he will leave if his concerns about maintaining a smaller squad are not heeded.
Speaking on Wednesday, Guardiola emphasized his desire to work with a compact group of players, arguing that a bloated squad creates challenges for player morale and management.
“I told the club I don’t want a big squad. I don’t want to put five, six players in the tribune, I don’t want that. I will quit,” Guardiola said.
“If they don’t make a short squad, I will not stay.
“It’s impossible for my soul to put players in the tribune and not play.”
The City boss made it clear that he finds it morally difficult to sign players and then sideline them without game time. His remarks come as Manchester City face a challenging season.
The team suffered a major setback last weekend, losing to Crystal Palace in the FA Cup final meaning they will end the campaign without a major trophy.
Despite the disappointment, Guardiola’s side remains in the race for UEFA Champions League qualification, with the final round of Premier League matches to be played on Sunday.
City improved their chances with a 3-1 win over Bournemouth on Tuesday. That victory saw them climb to 68 points two points ahead of Chelsea, Newcastle, and Aston Villa, and three above Nottingham Forest.
As it stands, City are vying with those four clubs for the remaining three Champions League spots. A win over Fulham in their final match will secure third place for City. Even a draw could suffice due to their superior goal difference.
