Hungary Knocks Nigeria Out of U19 Women’s World Cup
The Junior D’Tigress were eliminated from the ongoing FIBA U19 Women’s Basketball World Cup in Czechia after suffering a 77-51 loss to Hungary’s basketball team on Wednesday.
According to the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN), the Nigerian team was thoroughly outplayed by their opponents, struggling throughout the match.
Nigeria began the game on a promising note with a 9-9 scoreline in the first quarter. However, they faltered in the second quarter, losing 12-30.
Though the team mounted a fightback in the third quarter with a 15-16 points tally, it wasn’t enough to trouble the European side. Hungary played the 4th quarter more intensely, scoring 16-15 to secure their lead and ease to victory.
Hungary’s Kinga Jisepovits topped the scoring charts for her team with 19 points, while teammate Eliza Farbas grabbed 13 rebounds. For Nigeria, Tobenna Nweke led the scoring with 12 points, and Francis Chukwu recorded 9 rebounds.
Despite crashing out of the competition, the Nigerian girls made history as the first African team to win a match in the tournament’s history and also compete in the round of 16.
