Force HQ Dismisses Officers Over Effurun Killing, Orders Immediate Prosecution
The Nigeria Police Force has ordered the dismissal of officers implicated in the controversial killing of Mene Ogidi in Effurun, Delta State, and directed their immediate prosecution in what authorities describe as a firm stance against extra-judicial actions.
The decision followed the conclusion of expedited disciplinary proceedings at Force Headquarters, Abuja, initiated by the Inspector-General of Police, Olatunji Rilwan Disu, over the fatal shooting incident that occurred on April 26, 2026.
In a statement issued by Force Public Relations Officer, DCP Anthony Okon Placid, the Force Disciplinary Committee (FDC) found that the principal officer, ASP Nuhu Usman, acted in gross violation of Force Order 237 and established rules guiding the use of firearms.
The Committee described the conduct as unlawful, unprofessional, and a direct breach of the duty to protect lives.
“His actions were a clear betrayal of the oath to uphold the law and safeguard citizens,” the statement noted.
Following the findings, the IGP approved the recommendation for the immediate dismissal of ASP Usman and other officers found culpable, forwarding the decision to the Police Service Commission for ratification.
The Force further confirmed that the officers will be handed over to appropriate judicial authorities for prosecution upon completion of administrative procedures.
Reiterating its position, the Police leadership emphasized that no officer has the right to take life outside the provisions of the law, warning that any abuse of power will attract strict disciplinary and legal consequences.
“The Nigeria Police Force maintains zero tolerance for extra-judicial conduct and will continue to enforce accountability at all levels,” the statement added.
The IGP extended condolences to the family of the deceased, Mene Ogidi, assuring them that justice will not only be done but will be seen to be done.
The Force also urged members of the public to remain calm and law-abiding as the legal process unfolds, reaffirming its commitment to professionalism, human rights, and public trust.
