Lagos-Calabar Coastal Highway Renamed After Tinubu

The Federal Government has officially renamed the Lagos-Calabar Coastal Highway as the President Bola Ahmed Tinubu Coastal Highway, honouring President Bola Ahmed Tinubu for conceiving the landmark project.

The announcement was made on Thursday by the Minister of Works, David Umahi, during the commissioning of the completed 30-kilometre Section 1 of the highway in Lagos. According to the minister, the decision was taken in consultation with the leadership and management of the Federal Ministry of Works.

Umahi said the renaming was in recognition of Tinubu’s vision, revealing that the President conceived the idea for the coastal highway nearly 30 years before assuming office.“By the power conferred on me as the Honourable Minister of Works, and in consultation with the Permanent Secretary, the Minister of State, the directors and the entire staff of the ministry, we have decided to name the entire Lagos-Calabar Coastal Highway after President Bola Ahmed Tinubu.”

He described the project as one of Nigeria’s most ambitious infrastructure initiatives, noting that it is expected to improve connectivity along the country’s coastline, boost commerce and tourism, create jobs, and stimulate economic growth across the affected states.

The 750-kilometre highway stretches from Lagos to Calabar, traversing several coastal states. It is a flagship project of the Tinubu administration and forms part of the government’s broader infrastructure development agenda.

The decision to rename the highway is expected to generate public debate, given the scale and significance of the project, which has remained one of the most closely watched infrastructure developments in the country.
