Europa League: Man Utd Seeks Final Spot
Published on
Manchester United are poised to reach the Europa League final after a commanding 3-0 win over Athletic Bilbao in the first leg of their semi-final tie.
Despite a dismal Premier League season, Ruben Amorim’s side are one step away from a potential all-English final against Tottenham.
The Red Devils reverted to their struggling form in the Premier League, suffering their 16th defeat of the season at Brentford, but Amorim remains focused on the Europa League. “We are losing games in the Premier League, we are fighting for the Europa League, so we need to accept that and think about Thursday as the most important game for us,” he said.
Amorim’s priorities were evident in his team selection for the Brentford match, where he made eight changes, fielding the third-youngest side in Premier League history.
The Portuguese boss is candid about the importance of winning the Europa League, which would secure a Champions League spot and a significant financial boost.
“We know that, but we need to win, and we need to fight to win this competition, to give something to our fans, and to go to the Champions League,” Amorim told Sky Sports. “Then we will have time to prepare the team to cope with those two competitions.”
Bruno Fernandes has been instrumental in United’s Europa League run, with 31 goal involvements in 32 knockout-stage appearances. If United progress, they would face Tottenham in an all-English final, a prospect that would bring a glimmer of hope to a season that has been largely disappointing.
The potential for an all-English final would also mean six Premier League teams in next season’s Champions League, a testament to the country’s growing football prowess. Can United overcome Bilbao and make history?
