Delta Investment Summit: Enahoro Calls for Fish, Poultry Revolution in Delta

High Chief Eta Enahoro, immediate past Vice President (South-South) of the Poultry Association of Nigeria (PAN), has urged Delta State Governor, Rt. Hon. Sheriff Oborevwori, to prioritise investments in fish and poultry, describing the sectors as game changers capable of transforming the state’s economy and creating sustainable jobs.

Speaking at the Delta State Economic and Investment Summit 2026, Enahoro said developing the fish and poultry industries would significantly reduce unemployment, arguing that many young people could earn more as agribusiness entrepreneurs than through political appointments.

“If we are serious, fish and poultry can transform this state to a level where nobody will come and ask you to appoint him Special Assistant to the Governor.”

He noted that Delta State depends heavily on poultry and fish supplied from Oyo State, revealing that about 90 per cent of poultry meat and fish consumed in Delta comes from Ibadan.

“Ninety percent of the poultry meat consumed in Delta State comes from Ibadan. Can you imagine? Ninety percent of the fish consumed in Delta State comes from Ibadan.”

According to Enahoro, reversing the trend would require deliberate government support for local producers, including investments in hatcheries, feed mills and processing facilities, while tackling negative perceptions surrounding locally produced day-old chicks.

Drawing from his experience in the poultry industry, he urged the state government to establish stronger partnerships with genuine investors and commercial farmers to build a sustainable livestock value chain.

Enahoro also called on the state government to conduct a comprehensive census of agribusiness operators to identify genuine farmers and ensure government interventions reach the intended beneficiaries.

“Your agriculture team needs to do a lot by taking a census of who is who in agribusiness in Delta State.”

He further lamented that despite being one of the largest agricultural investors in Isoko, no government official had visited his farm to understand its operations or assess how it contributes to the state’s economy.

Expressing confidence in the sector’s potential, Enahoro said strategic investment in fish and poultry could reposition Delta State as a leading agricultural hub within two years.

“Through fish and poultry, I can tell you that, in the next two years, the sky will be your limit.”
