Eminem Celebrates 18 Years Sober After Near-Fatal Overdose
American rap icon Eminem has marked 18 years of sobriety, reflecting on a journey that began after a life-threatening drug overdose.
The 53-year-old rapper took to Instagram on April 20 to commemorate the milestone, sharing a sobriety coin engraved with symbolic inscriptions representing his recovery journey.
Eminem, born Marshall Mathers, has been open about his past struggles with prescription drug addiction, revealing that he once consumed high doses of substances including Vicodin and Valium at the peak of his dependency.
His turning point came after a near-fatal overdose in 2007, which left him hospitalised and forced him to confront the severity of his condition.
“After the overdose, I came home going, ‘Yo, bro, I need something, I’m going to die if I don’t do something,’” he previously recalled.
Following the incident, the rapper committed to recovery and has remained sober since April 2008, rebuilding both his life and career.
His sobriety journey also influenced his music, including the release of his 2009 album Relapse, which chronicled his struggles and path to recovery.
Over the years, Eminem has continued to celebrate his sobriety milestones publicly, using his experience to inspire others battling addiction and emphasizing the importance of seeking help.
