Doctor Jailed for Life for Poisoning 30 Patients, Killing 12
A French court on Thursday sentenced Dr. Frederic Pechier, 53, to life imprisonment for poisoning 30 patients, 12 of whom died, in what prosecutors described as a deliberate attempt to harm colleagues.
Pechier, an anaesthetist who worked at two clinics in Besancon, allegedly contaminated IV bags with potassium, local anaesthetics, adrenaline, and anticoagulants to induce cardiac arrests or haemorrhaging in patients between 2008 and 2017. His youngest alleged victim, four-year-old Teddy, survived two cardiac arrests during a routine tonsil surgery in 2016, while the oldest was 89.
During the three-month trial, prosecutors said Pechier “used medicine to kill” and sought to psychologically intimidate co-workers while feeding a “thirst for power.” Pechier denied wrongdoing, claiming that most incidents were medical errors made by colleagues. He admitted that poisoning occurred at one of the clinics, but denied responsibility.
“You will be incarcerated immediately,” presiding judge Delphine Thibierge said, as Pechier appeared unmoved.
The case came to light after a 2017 investigation into a series of suspicious cardiac arrests among low-risk patients. The court heard that Pechier’s actions were premeditated and targeted patients treated by colleagues with whom he was in conflict.
Pechier’s conviction follows other high-profile medical crime cases in France, including retired doctor Joel Le Scouarnec, who was sentenced in May to 20 years in prison for sexually abusing 298 patients, mostly children.
