DESOPADEC De-silts Drainages, Waterways in Ika Nation to Tackle Flooding
The Delta State Oil Producing Areas Development Commission (DESOPADEC) has commenced the de-silting of major drainages in Ika Nation to ensure free flow of water and prevent seasonal flooding. The initiative, which began on Wednesday, July 30, 2025, is already receiving commendations from residents.
Hon. Cordelia Anyangwu, the DESOPADEC Board Member representing Ika ethnic nationality, described the project as evidence that “DESOPADEC is working.” She made this declaration while supervising the de-silting at Dein’s Palace Junction in Ika South Local Government Area.
According to her, the yearly intervention is aimed at preventing floodwater from destroying roads and property, and it aligns with Governor Sheriff Oborevwori’s administration’s priority on flood control and infrastructure protection.
The project spans key locations across Ika land, including Agbor-Obi in Ika South, Owa-Ekei Road in Ika North East, and the Abavo drainage opening in Ika South.
Comrade Iweka Kingsley, who leads the Commission’s excavation team, assured that the de-silting would be completed by the weekend, as directed by DESOPADEC Chairman Olorogun John Nani and Managing Director Chief Festus Ochonogor.
Appreciation from community members continues to pour in. Favour Chukwuka, a shop owner at Orikeze Junction, praised the Commission for the “massive work” being done. Also, Comrade Igbenigun Clement, Secretary of Agbor Youths, lauded Hon. Anyangwu’s dedication in pushing for cleaner, flood-free environments.
In her remarks, Hon. Anyangwu warned against dumping debris in drainages and revealed plans to meet with the Council Chairman to create a taskforce that would enforce environmental sanitation and penalize defaulters.
The DESOPADEC team also called on residents to take ownership of their environment and support government efforts to curb flooding. With this initiative, DESOPADEC continues to make significant strides in improving the quality of life in Ika Nation.
