Delta Govt Redeems ₦20m Pledge to World Spelling Bee Champion Great Chiedu Okediachi

The Delta State Government has redeemed its ₦20 million pledge to Master Great Chiedu Okediachi, the state’s World Spelling Bee Champion, in recognition of his outstanding achievement and contribution to the reputation of Delta State and Nigeria.

The Commissioner for Secondary Education, Dr. Kingsley Ashibogwu, presented the cheque to Great on behalf of the state government at his office in Asaba on Wednesday, August 12, 2026.

Ashibogwu said the payment fulfilled a pledge made by Governor Sheriff Oborevwori following Great’s emergence as World Spelling Bee Champion.

He explained that the governor’s support for the competition went beyond financial assistance, noting that Oborevwori personally encouraged and prayed for the success of Delta’s young participants.

According to the commissioner, Governor Oborevwori had earlier approved ₦40 million for the sponsorship of the spelling bee competition, while the additional ₦20 million was specifically approved to reward Great for his exceptional performance.

Ashibogwu said the gesture was also intended to inspire other students across Delta State to pursue excellence, hard work and global competitiveness.

He assured Great, his parents and his school that the Oborevwori administration would continue to support individuals and institutions whose achievements bring honour to Delta State and Nigeria.

The commissioner urged the young champion to regard the award as motivation for greater accomplishments, assuring him that the state’s support would not end with the presentation of the cheque.

He also commended Great’s school for nurturing his talents and urged other students to emulate his determination and excellence while continuing to project the good name of their institution and the state.

Speaking on behalf of the family, Great’s father, Mr Andrew Okediachi, expressed profound gratitude to Governor Oborevwori, the Delta State Government and the Ministry of Secondary Education for recognising and supporting his son’s achievement.

Okediachi described the gesture as the beginning of greater things for the school, Delta State and his family.

He appealed for an opportunity for the family to personally appreciate Governor Oborevwori and assured the state government of their continued partnership.

He also prayed for God’s blessings upon the governor, the Ministry of Secondary Education, the school and everyone who contributed to Great’s success.
