Cross River: Man Forced Into Coffin With Corpse Over Alleged Murder
OGOJA — A middle-aged man identified as Ulim Lobe was reportedly forced into a coffin alongside a deceased man over allegations that he was responsible for the victim’s death in Inyanya village, Bekwara Local Government Area of northern Cross River State.
According to a report by VANGAURD, the incident, which occurred on Monday, has shocked residents, with eyewitnesses saying it was carried out by youths of the community. Video footage shows Lobe lying face down on top of the corpse, which was covered in a white cloth, while his face was smeared with a white substance.
Theresa Abibu, a teacher in the community, confirmed the incident, saying the man was accused of causing the death of the deceased, who was reportedly a family member. She explained that the community elders and youths believed this punishment would serve as a deterrent against frequent deaths, which are locally attributed to witchcraft and other diabolical acts.
“The man was accused of being behind the death of the man in the coffin. There have been too many deaths in the community recently, and when Ulim was found responsible, they decided this was the way to teach him a lesson. Even if he was brought out, he was as good as dead,” Abibu said.
She added that the victim’s family supported the action, as they had suffered losses believed to be caused by similar acts.
