Cristiano Ronaldo Confirms 2026 World Cup Will Be His Last
Portuguese football superstar Cristiano Ronaldo has confirmed that the 2026 World Cup will be his final appearance at football’s biggest stage, signaling the approaching end of a legendary career.
The 40-year-old forward, who has scored more than 950 goals for club and country, also revealed that he plans to retire from football in “one or two years.” Speaking via video link at a Saudi-hosted global forum on tourism and investment, Ronaldo said:
“Definitely, yes. I’m going to be 41 years old, and I think it will be the moment.”
With characteristic humor, he added:
“Soon for me means in 10 years… No, I’m joking. I’m really enjoying the moment right now. In football, when you reach a certain age, you count the months very quickly. I feel very good at this moment. I score goals, and I still feel quick and sharp.”
Ronaldo reflected on his illustrious career since joining Al Nassr in 2023, saying he is proud of his accomplishments and grateful for every moment on the pitch:
“I gave everything for football. I did everything. I have many records at clubs and with the national team. Let’s enjoy the moment, live the moment.”
He also spoke about his son, Cristiano Jr, who plays for the Portugal Under-16 team:
“I wish my kids would be better than me. I want him to be happy, free, and not under the pressure of his daddy. I will always support him, whatever path he chooses.”
The five-time Ballon d’Or winner will aim for a sixth World Cup next year, having come closest to lifting the trophy in 2006, when Portugal lost to France in the semi-finals. Portugal can secure qualification for the 2026 tournament with a win over Ireland on Thursday.
