Club World Cup: Botafogo Beats PSG 1-0

In a stunning turn of events, Brazilian side Botafogo defeated reigning European champions Paris Saint-Germain 1-0 in the Club World Cup, all but securing a spot in the knockout rounds.

Igor Jesus’s first-half goal proved the difference-maker in front of a 53,699-strong crowd at the Pasadena Rose Bowl.

Despite being widely regarded as one of the tournament favorites following a scintillating 5-0 demolition of Inter Milan in the Champions League final last month, PSG struggled to break down Botafogo’s resilient defense.

The Brazilian side’s midfield trio of Marlon Freitas, Gregore, and Allan worked tirelessly to close down PSG’s Vitinha, denying him the space to launch attacks despite dominating possession.

“It was a difficult game, and we had to defend well, and we did our job and scored a goal,” Jesus said after the win. “A lot of people wondered, but we showed how strong Botafogo is. We’re really happy, we knew how important this game was.”

Jesus’s goal came against the run of play on 36 minutes, courtesy of a perfectly weighted through ball from Jefferson Savarino. The Botafogo striker wrongfooted Willian Pacho and swept a shot past PSG goalkeeper Gianluigi Donnarumma, which took a slight deflection on its way into the net.

PSG coach Luis Enrique acknowledged the difficulty of the match, saying, “We knew it was going to be a very difficult match – they defended very well. This Club World Cup is very intense and difficult, and all the teams are highly motivated, especially when they’re playing against us.” However, he remained optimistic about his team’s chances, adding, “If there’s a team that can turn it around, it’s our team. We’ve got to analyse this and there’s things we can improve. But I think our performance was good.”

The win leaves Botafogo firmly on course for the last 16, with a final group game against Atletico Madrid to come in Pasadena on Monday. Jesus, who had been linked with a move to Nottingham Forest earlier this year, quipped, “I think I made the right choice to stay in Botafogo.”

The result sets up an intriguing matchup between Botafogo and Atletico Madrid, with both teams looking to seal their spot in the knockout stages.
