Super Eagles B to Kick Off 8th African Nations Championship in Zanzibar
The Super Eagles B, Nigeria’s representative team at the 8th African Nations Championship, will play their group phase matches in Zanzibar, a Tanzanian archipelago with a population of less than two million people.
The team, which won silver in 2018 and bronze in 2014, is in Group D alongside defending champions Senegal, Congo, and Sudan.
The tournament, scheduled to run from August 2nd to 30th, will serve as a dress rehearsal for the 2027 Africa Cup of Nations, which will be hosted jointly by Kenya, Tanzania, and Uganda.
These three East African nations have been tasked with hosting this year’s championship as a test run.
According to the Confederation of African Football (CAF), the tournament’s opening match will take place at the Benjamin Mkapa Stadium in Dar es Salaam, mainland Tanzania. The final match is set for August 30th at the Moi International Sports Centre in Nairobi, Kenya.
Nigeria qualified for the championship after defeating Ghana 3-1 on aggregate in their qualifying fixture last December. Congo’s inclusion in Group D follows the disqualification of Equatorial Guinea by the CAF Appeals Committee.
The groupings are as follows:
GROUP A: Kenya, Morocco, Angola, DR Congo, Zambia (Nairobi)
GROUP B: Tanzania, Madagascar, Mauritania, Burkina Faso, Central African Republic (Dar es Salaam)
GROUP C: Uganda, Niger, Guinea, South Africa, Algeria (Kampala)
GROUP D: Senegal, Congo, Sudan, Nigeria (Zanzibar)
