Charly Boy Reacts to Bus Stop Renaming, Says Legacy Is Beyond Street Signs
Veteran entertainer and activist Charles Oputa, widely known as Charly Boy, has responded to the recent renaming of a bus stop in Lagos State that was previously named after him.
Speaking in an interview on Channels Television’s Morning Briefing on Tuesday, Charly Boy stated that the change does not affect him personally.
“It doesn’t matter to me. Anyone who has done something meaningful for their community can take the shine.
I’m indifferent. That’s not our priority right now.”
The outspoken activist emphasized that Nigerians should focus on more pressing national issues, particularly electoral reforms and credible elections.
“There are bigger things we should be concerned about—like making sure that come 2024, our votes count. That’s what the indicators are pointing to, and that’s what we should all be focused on,” he said.
Charly Boy also dismissed any suggestion that he felt insulted or slighted by the move. He stressed that true legacy is not defined by public signs or structures, but by meaningful impact.
The bus stop, unofficially named “Charly Boy Bus Stop” by residents of the area in recognition of his contributions to civic activism, was renamed “Badoo Bus Stop” on Saturday by Kolade Alabi, the outgoing Chairman of Bariga Local Council Development Area.
The renaming has triggered mixed reactions both from local residents and online users. While some questioned the motive and transparency behind the change, others viewed it as an example of the ever-evolving nature of community recognition and memory.
