Bad Bunny Seeks $465K After Winning Case Against Mr Eazi’s Record Label
Puerto Rican global music star Bad Bunny is reportedly seeking $465,612 in legal fees after a copyright lawsuit filed by emPawa Africa was dismissed in court.
The legal dispute, which began in May 2024, stemmed from allegations by Nigerian producer Ezeani Chidera Godfrey, popularly known as Dera, who claimed that Bad Bunny’s track Enséñame a Bailar used an uncleared sample from Empty My Pocket, a 2019 song he produced for Joeboy.
Mr Eazi, founder of emPawa Africa, had also publicly accused Bad Bunny’s team of ignoring attempts to resolve the dispute, calling out the singer on X (formerly Twitter) over the alleged sampling issue.
However, the court dismissed the case, paving the way for Bad Bunny to now seek reimbursement for legal expenses incurred during the proceedings.
The case has drawn attention within the global music industry, highlighting ongoing concerns around sampling rights, intellectual property, and cross-border copyright disputes between Afrobeats creators and international artists.
While neither party has issued a detailed post-ruling statement, the development marks a significant moment in the evolving conversation about fair credit and compensation in global music collaborations.
