Sowore Announces October 20 Protest March to Aso Rock for Nnamdi Kanu’s Release
Human rights activist and former presidential candidate, Omoyele Sowore, has announced October 20 as the date for a protest march to the Aso Rock Presidential Villa in Abuja, demanding the release of detained Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB) leader, Nnamdi Kanu.
Sowore made the announcement via his official X (formerly Twitter) handle, @YeleSowore, on Wednesday, stating that the demonstration, tagged #FreeNnamdiKanuNow, will commence by 7 a.m.
“We now have a date for the historic #FreeNnamdiKanuNow protest march to the Aso Rock Villa in Abuja. It is October 20 at 7AM!” Sowore wrote.
The activist, known for his consistent advocacy for civil rights and political reform, described the upcoming protest as a “historic” move aimed at compelling the federal government to heed calls for Kanu’s unconditional release.
Nnamdi Kanu, who has been in the custody of the Department of State Services (DSS) since June 2021 following his controversial extradition from Kenya, is currently facing charges bordering on terrorism and treasonable felony.
Despite several court rulings ordering his release, Kanu remains detained a situation that has drawn condemnation from rights groups and sparked sporadic protests across the South-East.
The planned protest, coming exactly a year after the #EndSARS memorial, has raised anticipation among activists and supporters of Kanu, who see it as a renewed push for justice and accountability.
Security agencies are yet to issue any statement regarding the planned march.
