Soldier Kills Wife, Commits Suicide at Wawa Cantonment – Nigerian Army
The Nigerian Army has confirmed a tragic incident involving one of its personnel, Lance Corporal Akenleye Femi, who reportedly killed his wife before taking his own life at the Wawa Cantonment in Niger State.
In a statement issued on Sunday, October 12, 2025, by Captain Stephen Nwankwo, Acting Assistant Director of Army Public Relations, 22 Armoured Brigade, Ilorin, the Army described the incident as “tragic” and said it occurred on Friday, October 11, 2025.
According to the statement, the lifeless bodies of the soldier and his wife were discovered in their apartment at Block 15, Room 24, Corporals and Below Quarters, Wawa Cantonment, sparking tension and shock among residents of the barracks.
Preliminary investigations revealed that Lance Corporal Femi, who was attached to the 221 Battalion, had been on duty within the cantonment but sought permission from his superior to attend to personal matters before the tragedy unfolded.
“The remains of the deceased have been preserved, while an in-depth investigation has since commenced to ascertain the circumstances surrounding the tragic incident,” the statement read.
The Nigerian Army expressed deep regret over the incident and extended condolences to the families, friends, and colleagues of the deceased couple.
Brigadier General Ezra Barkins, Commander of the 22 Armoured Brigade, assured the public that the case would be thoroughly investigated and that the findings would be made public.
He also emphasized that the Army would take further measures to prevent similar incidents in the future.
“The NA anticipates maximum understanding and cooperation of the public as always, assuring that the outcome of the investigation will not only be made public but also thoroughly scrutinised,” the statement added.
The Nigerian Army concluded by praying for the peaceful repose of the souls of the deceased.
