SMEDAN, EU Partner to Empower Nigerian MSMEs, Drive Green and Digital Economy

In a major boost for Nigeria’s small business ecosystem, the Director General of the Small and Medium Enterprises Development Agency of Nigeria (SMEDAN), Mr. Charles Odii, hosted the European Union Ambassador to Nigeria and ECOWAS, H.E. Ambassador Gautier Mignot, in Abuja to deepen bilateral cooperation for enterprise development, market access, and job creation.

The high-level diplomatic engagement focused on expanding structural support for Micro, Small, and Medium Enterprises (MSMEs), unlocking international investment channels, and positioning young Nigerian entrepreneurs to capture opportunities within the global green and digital economies.

Direct Engagement and Facility Tour

As part of the visit, Ambassador Mignot and his delegation conducted an inspection tour of SMEDAN’s Common Facility Centre and workshop in Abuja. The facility houses modern industrial machinery, innovation hubs, and technical equipment designed to lower production costs, foster skills acquisition, and boost local manufacturing standards for Nigerian entrepreneurs.

The delegation also held direct interactive sessions with local government stakeholders, young business leaders, and grassroot innovators. Discussions highlighted strategies for increasing the patronage and export volume of Nigerian-made products into EU Member States, while improving compliance with international trade standards.

Unlocking Opportunities in Green and Digital Transitions

A cornerstone of the strategic dialogue was the rapid transformation of Nigeria’s digital and sustainable economic sectors. Both parties noted that Nigeria’s youth demographic holds a competitive advantage in technological innovation and eco-friendly business models, provided they are supported with adequate capital, technical know-how, and export channels.

SMEDAN officials emphasized that stronger international alliances with bodies like the European Union are vital for transferring advanced technology, building enterprise capacity, and providing direct financial instruments required for scaling small businesses across West Africa.

Strengthening Nigeria-EU Economic Synergy

Reaffirming the agency’s mission to drive inclusive growth, SMEDAN reiterated its commitment to converting diplomatic partnerships into measurable economic outcomes for grassroots entrepreneurs.

“As Nigeria continues to build a more competitive and inclusive economy, SMEDAN remains committed to fostering partnerships that translate into tangible opportunities for our MSMEs and young entrepreneurs,” the agency stated in an official declaration following the meeting.
