Santi Cazorla Retires From Professional Football at 41
Former Arsenal and Spain midfielder Santi Cazorla has officially announced his retirement from professional football, bringing the curtain down on an extraordinary career that spanned more than two decades.
The 41-year-old confirmed his decision after helping his boyhood club, Real Oviedo, secure promotion back to Spain’s top flight, describing the moment as the perfect ending to his playing career. The decision followed weeks of reflection with his family after initially leaving the door open to extending his career.
Cazorla enjoyed a remarkable career with clubs including Villarreal, Málaga, Arsenal, Al Sadd, and Real Oviedo, earning widespread admiration for his exceptional technique, vision and resilience.
On the international stage, he made 81 appearances for Spain and was part of the historic squads that won the UEFA European Championship in 2008 and 2012.
His career was nearly cut short by a devastating Achilles injury that required multiple surgeries and left doctors fearing he might never walk properly again. Defying the odds, Cazorla returned to elite football and eventually fulfilled his dream of ending his career with Real Oviedo, the club where his football journey began.
Widely regarded as one of Spain’s finest midfielders of his generation, Cazorla leaves behind a legacy defined not only by trophies and talent but also by perseverance, professionalism and an enduring love for the game.
