PS5 Price Hikes Hit UK, Europe
Sony has increased the price of its PlayStation 5 consoles globally, citing “challenging” market conditions driven by high inflation and fluctuating exchange rates.
The digital edition of the PS5 in the UK now costs £429.99, a £40 increase, while European customers will pay approximately €499.99, a €50 rise.
Isabelle Tomatis, Sony Interactive Entertainment executive, attributed the price hike to “high inflation and fluctuating exchange rates.” The price increase affects Australia and New Zealand, including physical versions with disc drives.
In the UK, the physical edition’s price remains unchanged, but Sony has reduced the cost of its disc drives from £99.99 to £69.99 for those who want to play physical media on digital consoles.
Gaming industry expert Christopher Dring noted that while Sony didn’t directly mention tariffs, their “knock-on effect” might impact pricing worldwide.
“The US is the biggest market for video game consoles, and rather than simply increase prices there, it’s possible the likes of PlayStation could increase pricing globally in an effort to protect, as best they can, the US market,” he said.
“Ultimately, the era when game consoles went down in price over time is certainly over.”
This marks the second price increase for the PS5 since its launch, with the digital edition’s price rising by roughly £70 from its initial £360 tag. Nintendo’s Switch 2 console launch was also affected by US tariffs, prompting the company to suspend US pre-orders to assess the impact.
