Premier League to Pause Matches for Ramadan Fast Breaks

The Premier League, together with the English Football League (EFL), has confirmed that matches played during Ramadan will include brief pauses at natural stoppages in play to allow Muslim players and match officials to break their fast after sunset.

According to league officials, play will not be stopped abruptly but will be halted at convenient moments, such as a goal kick, free kick, or throw-in so those observing Ramadan can quickly eat or drink without disrupting the flow of the game.

This approach, first adopted across English football in 2021, has been welcomed as a practical and respectful gesture that balances religious observance with competitive integrity. The practice reflects growing recognition within football of the diverse cultural and religious backgrounds of players in the modern game.

The decision is expected to benefit numerous Muslim stars in the Premier League and EFL, as sunset times coincide with evening fixtures during the holy month. It also highlights the league’s commitment to inclusivity and player welfare.
