Omar Artan Welcomed as Hero in Somalia After World Cup Setback
Somali international referee Omar Abdulkadir Artan has received a hero’s welcome in Mogadishu after being denied entry into the United States, a decision that has ruled him out of officiating at the 2026 FIFA World Cup.
Artan, who was selected among elite referees for the tournament, was stopped at Miami International Airport despite reportedly holding a valid visa and official FIFA accreditation.
Following his return, supporters and officials in Somalia gathered to celebrate his achievements, hailing him as a national symbol of pride and excellence in African football officiating.
The referee’s exclusion has sparked widespread reactions across the football world, with concerns raised over immigration barriers affecting tournament officials and participants.
Somali sports authorities expressed disappointment over the decision, noting that Artan had complied with all travel requirements ahead of the competition.
The 2026 World Cup, jointly hosted by the United States, Mexico, and Canada, has already seen several visa-related controversies involving officials and players.
Despite the setback, Artan’s recognition as one of Africa’s top referees has been widely acknowledged, with many describing his journey as a milestone for Somali football.
