NUC Approves 33 New Universities in Nigeria, Total Now 309
The National Universities Commission (NUC) has approved 33 new universities across Nigeria for the 2025 academic year, bringing the total number of accredited universities in the country to 309.
According to official reports, the approvals include federal, state, and private institutions, with private universities leading the count of newly licensed institutions.
The expansion marks a major development in Nigeria’s higher education sector, aimed at improving access to tertiary education for the nation’s youth and reducing pressure on existing universities.
Education experts say this move has the potential to ease admission bottlenecks and provide more opportunities for students across different regions of the country, though ensuring quality and compliance with academic standards remains a key priority for regulators.
