BREAKING: National Grid Collapses for Second Time in 2026
Nigeria’s National Grid has collapsed again, marking its second system failure in 2026, plunging the country into another nationwide blackout.
As of the time of filing this report on Tuesday, available data showed that power supply dropped to zero megawatts, leaving all 11 electricity distribution companies (DisCos) without allocation.
The latest incident comes barely days after the grid recorded its first collapse of the year last Friday, and weeks after a similar failure on December 29, 2025, which triggered widespread outages across the country.
Electricity generation reportedly fell sharply from over 4,500 megawatts to 0 megawatts by about 11:00 a.m., with all 23 power generation plants connected to the grid losing output during the collapse.
While the exact cause of the system failure could not be immediately determined, grid collapses have often been linked to technical faults, inadequate maintenance of transmission infrastructure, and fluctuations in generation capacity.
As of the time of filing this report, the Transmission Company of Nigeria (TCN) had not issued a detailed official statement on the incident.
