MKO Abiola’s Wife, Doyin, Passes Away at 82
Doyin Abiola, a renowned Nigerian journalist and wife of the late MKO Abiola, has died at the age of 82. Her son, Jamiu, confirmed her passing, saying, “Yes, she passed away last night.”
A trailblazer in the media industry, Dr. Abiola spent over three decades breaking barriers and shaping public discourse through journalism.
She was the first Nigerian woman to become editor-in-chief of a national daily newspaper and led the National Concord to become one of Nigeria’s most influential media platforms.
Born in 1943, Dr. Abiola earned a degree in English and Drama from the University of Ibadan and later obtained a PhD in Communications and Political Science from New York University.
She worked with various media outlets, including Daily Sketch, Daily Times, and National Concord, where she rose to become Managing Director and Editor-in-Chief.
Dr. Abiola received numerous awards and honors for her contributions to journalism and democracy in Nigeria, including the Diamond Awards for Media Excellence Lifetime Achievement Award. She also served as Chairperson of the CNN African Journalist of the Year Awards.
Her legacy extends beyond her newsroom accomplishments, as she paved the way for future generations of journalists, particularly women. Funeral arrangements are expected to be announced by the family.
