FIFA Fines Nigeria, DR Congo Over World Cup Play-Off Incidents

FIFA has sanctioned Nigeria and the Democratic Republic of Congo following disciplinary incidents during their 2026 World Cup African qualifying play-off match played on November 16, 2025.

According to the governing body’s disciplinary overview for the qualifiers, both federations were found guilty of separate breaches of the FIFA Disciplinary Code during the encounter.

Nigeria was penalised after spectators were reported to have thrown objects onto the pitch during the match, a violation relating to order and security at matches under Articles 17 and 17.2.b of the disciplinary code. As a result, the Nigeria Football Federation was fined 1,000 Swiss francs.

The DR Congo Football Federation received a heavier sanction after supporters were found to have used laser pointers or similar electronic devices during the game, an offence that contravenes Article 17.2.d of the FIFA Disciplinary Code. FIFA consequently imposed a 5,000 Swiss francs fine on the Congolese body.

The sanctions stem from the tense play-off clash between the two sides, which ended with DR Congo defeating Nigeria 4–3 on penalties after a drawn match to advance in the qualification process.

The disciplinary action comes as Nigeria continues to await a separate decision from FIFA regarding its protest over the alleged use of ineligible players by DR Congo during the decisive play-off match.

FIFA noted that disciplinary decisions are based on the circumstances of each case and may still be subject to appeal.
