FG Dismisses Genocide Claims, Says Nigeria Remains United and Peaceful
The Federal Government has dismissed recent claims suggesting that Nigeria is a destination for genocide, describing such allegations as baseless, misleading, and capable of inciting division among citizens.
Minister of Information and National Orientation, Alhaji Mohammed Idris, made the clarification during the Quarterly Strategy Meeting of the Progressive Governors Forum with Commissioners of Information from APC-governed states, held under the theme “FGN Synergy 2025: One Message, One Future.”
Idris stated that Nigeria remains an accommodating and peaceful nation, bound by shared values that transcend political, ethnic, and religious differences. He urged Nigerians to reject divisive propaganda and counter false narratives that threaten national unity.
“This narration of genocide is false and dangerous. It is aimed at dividing Nigeria and instigating hatred, which will not do us any good as a country,” Idris said.
He further charged information managers across the country to intensify efforts in promoting credible information, national cohesion, and patriotism, both locally and internationally. According to him, fake news and misinformation pose a serious threat to Nigeria’s stability and development.
“We must have the capacity to deal with wrong narratives, not only within the media space in Nigeria but also at the international level. Nigerians must stand together to protect our unity and progress,” the minister added.
