BREAKING: Finance Minister Wale Edun Flown to UK for Medical Treatment

The Minister of Finance and Coordinating Minister of the Economy, Wale Edun, has been flown to the United Kingdom for medical treatment, multiple sources confirmed on Tuesday morning.

The development, first reported by Western Post and corroborated by The PUNCH, follows days of speculation about the minister’s health condition.

According to reliable sources, Edun departed Abuja for Lagos on Monday night via a commercial flight before connecting to London aboard a British Airways flight the same evening.

Until his departure, Presidency officials had maintained that the minister was recuperating at his Abuja residence under the care of Nigerian doctors. They, however, dismissed rumours that he had suffered a stroke or become incapacitated.

A senior government official, who spoke on condition of anonymity, confirmed that the decision to fly the minister abroad was made after doctors recommended further evaluation.

“It’s true, he has left already,” the source said. “His condition required more attention, so he’s gone for medical care abroad.”

Presidential aide Bayo Onanuga earlier confirmed that Edun, 69, had been ill but was initially receiving treatment in Nigeria. He added that there were no plans to replace him in the Federal Executive Council.

“Yes, he’s indisposed. He suddenly fell ill, but he’s recuperating,” Onanuga said earlier in the week.

As a result of his health situation, Edun will miss the 2025 World Bank and International Monetary Fund Annual Meetings in Washington, D.C., which begin on Tuesday. The Central Bank Governor, Olayemi Cardoso, is leading Nigeria’s delegation in his place.

Appointed on August 28, 2023, Wale Edun has been a key figure in President Bola Tinubu’s economic reform team, overseeing critical fiscal and monetary adjustments such as petrol subsidy removal, FX unification, and inflation control measures.
