FG Bans Okada, Tricycles on Lagos-Calabar Coastal Highway

The Federal Government has banned the operation of commercial motorcycles, popularly known as okada, and tricycles (keke) on the Lagos-Calabar Coastal Highway as part of measures to protect the newly constructed road infrastructure.

The directive, which takes effect this week, was announced in a statement by the Federal Controller of Works in Lagos State, Olufemi Dare. He said the restriction was introduced to prevent misuse of the superhighway and ensure its long-term sustainability.

Dare explained that the ban also applies to all federal bridges across Lagos State. He added that indiscriminate parking of trucks and articulated vehicles, as well as the dumping of refuse along highway corridors, would no longer be tolerated. Offenders, he warned, would face strict enforcement measures.

According to the Controller, signages indicating the new restrictions have already been installed, while task force officials will be deployed to strategic locations to ensure compliance.

Describing the Lagos-Calabar Coastal Highway as a “world-class infrastructure,” Dare urged motorists and other road users to obey the new directives, stressing that preserving the road would enhance its lifespan, improve safety and protect the government’s investment.
