#EndSARS @5: Honouring the Fallen, Renewing the Demand for Justice

October 20, 2020, is no longer just a date on the calendar, it is an eternal symbol of courage, pain, and the demand for justice in Nigeria.

Today marks five years since the tragic night at the Lekki Toll Gate, where peaceful protesters waving the national flag and singing the anthem were met with gunfire. For millions of Nigerians home and abroad, 20-10-2020 remains a scar on the nation’s conscience, a day that will never be forgotten.

What began as a peaceful youth-led movement to end police brutality under the Special Anti-Robbery Squad (SARS) transformed into one of the most defining uprisings in the country’s democratic history. The EndSARS movement not only exposed deep institutional failures but also awakened a generation to its civic power and responsibility.

On October 20, 2020, lights went out at the Lekki Toll Gate. CCTV cameras were reportedly removed. And then came the gunshots. Videos streamed live by DJ Switch showed terrified youths screaming and trying to save the wounded. That night changed Nigeria forever.

Although the Nigerian authorities have contested various accounts of the incident, the Lagos State Judicial Panel of Inquiry described the event as a “massacre,” acknowledging that unarmed citizens were shot and killed. The ECOWAS Court of Justice later ruled that Nigeria violated the rights of peaceful protesters and ordered reparations.

Despite judicial panels set up across 29 states, and multiple reports confirming human rights violations, justice remains elusive. Compensation has been partially paid in a few states, while many victims and their families are still waiting.

Human rights lawyer, Kunle Edun, SAN, said: “The courts gave judgments awarding damages to victims, yet the government ignored them. Disrespect for judgments is an invitation to anarchy, not even a million soldiers can stop it.”

Executive Director of Cadrell Advocacy Centre, Evan Ufeli, added: “Panels make findings, but there’s no independent process to translate them into prosecutions.”

Human rights activist Amanda Demechi-Asagba insists that: “Victims deserve justice, compensation, restitution, and not rhetoric.”

Why 20-10-2020 Can Never Be Forgotten:

  • It was the day young Nigerians stood united, transcending tribe, religion and political affiliation.
  • It marked global recognition of Nigerian youths as agents of change.
  • It revealed the urgent need for police reform and accountability.
  • It birthed a civic awakening that remains alive today.

From annual memorial marches to artistic tributes, from international conversations to social media campaigns, the message is loud and clear: EndSARS is not over, it is a continuous fight for justice, reform, and remembrance.

Five years on, many issues that sparked the protests persist, police brutality, lack of accountability, abuse of power, and shrinking civic space. Protesters who gather for memorials are still often intimidated or detained.

As human rights lawyer Deji Adeyanju noted: “Implementation of judicial panel recommendations depends on political will and budgetary approval, both of which are lacking.”

Today, the Lekki Toll Gate stands not just as a physical structure, but as a national monument of resistance. The youth who stood there, chanting “Soro Soke,” did not die in vain, their voices continue to echo through generations.

EndSARS is no longer a protest, it is now a legacy. A symbol. A reminder.

Nigeria remembers. The world remembers.
20-10-2020 Never Forget.
