Delta Poly Ogwashi-Uku Non-Academic Staff Unions Disassociate from ASUP’s Strike

The leadership of the Non-Academic Staff Unions at Delta State Polytechnic, Ogwashi-Uku, comprising the Non-Academic Staff Union (NASU) and the Senior Staff Association of Nigerian Polytechnics (SSANIP) has distanced itself from the ongoing strike declared by the Academic Staff Union of Polytechnics (ASUP).

In a joint statement signed by the Chairman of NASU and Joint Unions of Polytechnics, Comrade Andrew Ayewumi, and the Chairman of SSANIP and Secretary of the Joint Polytechnics, Comrade Emeke Owabor Godchoice, the unions described ASUP’s action as unnecessary, unilateral, and not representative of the collective interest of staff members of the institution.

The statement urged the general public, parents, and students to disregard the two-week warning strike declared by ASUP, insisting that it does not reflect the position or concerns of the non-academic staff of the Polytechnic.

According to the statement, NASU and SSANIP remain committed to peaceful dialogue and constructive engagement as the most effective means of resolving disputes. They also directed their members to continue with their normal duties, ensuring that academic and administrative operations in the Polytechnic continue uninterrupted.

“We believe in dialogue and due process. Industrial actions that disrupt the academic calendar or administrative stability are not in the best interest of our students or the institution,” the statement read.

The unions further clarified that ASUP’s decision to embark on a strike was not a joint union decision, stressing that NASU and SSANIP had no unresolved issues with either the Polytechnic’s management or Governing Council.

The statement reaffirmed the non-academic unions’ commitment to industrial harmony, pledging to support the state government’s efforts to maintain stability and promote the growth of technical education in Delta State.

“Our focus remains on building a peaceful work environment and supporting management in delivering quality education,” the statement concluded.
