Delta New CP Receives NUJ Leadership, Assures of Adequate Policing of State


The Nigeria Police have assured residents of Delta State of adequate security and safety of lives and property following concerns of possible increase in crimes that usually characterize the yuletide and the New Year festivities.

The Commissioner of Police (CP), Delta State Command, CP Michael Ogbizi, gave the assurance when the leadership of the State Council of the Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ) led by Comrade Michael Ikeogwu paid a familiarity visit on the commissioner.

The commissioner stated that the police were perfecting measures and strategies to respond swiftly to distress calls to nip crime in the bud even as he assured that surveillance activities were ongoing to prevent criminality.

On fears of the resurgence of roadblocks by police in the state, he restated that the ban on roadblocks was a directive from the Inspector General of Police, saying no officer would be insensitive to the director, clarifying however that what people misjudged for roadblocks were nipping points meant for routine interrogation of motorists.

CP Ogbizi emphasized that the police would continue to do their best but noted, “Our prayer is that the Lord will continue to help us in fighting criminality and maintaining peace and order.”

He pledged a robust interactive relationship with the media, saying he had very good rapport with the press in everywhere he had served, adding that Delta State would not be different.

The NUJ Chairman, Comrade Michael Ikeogwu informed CP Ogbizi that the visit was traditional for critical stakeholders like the CP and that he came at a time when crime rate was soaring in the state but acknowledged it had dwindled since the CP’s coming, expressing hope to see it sustained, adding, “You made a major breakthrough with the arrest of the alleged killers of the DELSU 300 undergraduate student Elozino and we want them charged to court soon.”

Comrade Ikeogwu noted that the police were closer to the people than other security agencies and called on the CP to charge his men to be friendlier with the people.

He told the CP that the present leadership was repositioning the union in the state to make it better than it met it and called for a mutually beneficial partnership with the command, as well as regular and all-encompassing interaction with the media.
