Delta Govt Moves Against Asaba Robberies, Orders Intelligence-Led Crackdown
The Delta State Government has pledged a swift, intelligence-driven response to tackle the rising wave of armed robberies targeting phone and gadget dealers in Asaba, reaffirming its commitment to maintaining law and order across the state.
Receiving protesting traders at the Government House, the Secretary to the State Government, Dr. Kingsley Emu, acknowledged the severity of the situation and assured stakeholders that the administration is already activating strategic security measures to address the threat.
He noted that a high-level security meeting would soon be convened with relevant agencies, including intelligence units, to thoroughly review the incidents and deploy targeted interventions.
Dr. Emu also stressed the importance of proper documentation of all reported cases and urged the affected traders to nominate representatives for a closed-door engagement with government and security officials.
According to him, emerging patterns suggest possible insider involvement in some of the robberies, adding that such concerns require careful, intelligence-led operations.
He further explained that certain security strategies would not be made public to avoid compromising ongoing efforts.
Reassuring the protesters, Dr. Emu said Delta State remains one of the more peaceful states in the country, adding that the current challenge would be addressed decisively.
“We will address this situation decisively. In a matter of weeks, the impact of our interventions will become evident,” he said.
He also advised business owners to strengthen internal security within their shops, describing it as a critical first line of defence against criminal infiltration.
Dr. Emu directed that all intelligence and relevant details be forwarded to the Chief Security Officer for immediate action, while appealing for patience and continued cooperation from stakeholders.
Speaking on behalf of the protesters, Mr. Victor Uche of Ibori Phones expressed concern over the increasing attacks on phone and gadget dealers in Asaba.
He noted that the city, once regarded as one of the safest in Nigeria, has recently witnessed a troubling rise in criminal activity, with attacks now occurring almost weekly.
Mr. Uche further revealed that victims possess video evidence of some of the robberies, alleging that perpetrators appear emboldened due to perceived gaps in security response.
He appealed to the state government for urgent intervention, citing significant financial losses suffered by business owners and the need to restore public confidence and safety in the area.
