Delta Assembly resumes 2024 Plenary, outlines plans for the Year


The Delta State House of Assembly has unveiled the 2024 framework as they resumed their plenary session on Tuesday.

This was contained in an address by the Honourable Speaker, Delta State House of Assembly, Rt. Hon. Emomotimi Dennis Guwor, during plenary.

According to Guwor, the event is a noteworthy development as it signifies the start of legislative activities for the year.

He outlined the important initiatives and priorities for the coming year in conjunction with their return to session.

Also outlining the legislative accomplishments of the Delta State House of Assembly over the previous seven months.

The speaker said, “in the last seven months of inauguration of the 8th Assembly, the House has recorded modest achievements. During this period, the House received seven Bills: four Executive Bills and three Private Member Bills.

“Out of the seven Bills, four received third reading and passed. Three out of the four have been assented to by His Excellency, Rt. Hon. (Elder) Sheriff Francis Orohwedor Oborevwori, Governor of the State; while one is awaiting assent. Two Bills are undergoing processing by the House while one was withdrawn by the sponsors.”

Guwor also noted that aside bills the House also received nominations for appointment of persons into the State Executive Council, Agencies, Boards, Commissions and other parastatals of government.

Speaking on 2024 Budget, Guwor said, “the 2024 Budget of the State is rightly christened Budget of Hope and Optimism. In ensuring that our constituents and indeed the State enjoy the fruits of the Budget, the House will deploy its oversight tentacles in monitoring and evaluating implementation of the Budget.

“Our priority is to engender accountability, probity, transparency and efficiency in the implementation of government policies, programmes and projects. We will collaborate with the Executive arm of Government and Civil Society Organisations in this regard.”

He also announced that the assembly will hold a retreat before the end of the month to articulate and draw up a Legislative agenda for the 8th Assembly adding that “the Legislative Agenda will be the legislative roadmap of the 8th Assembly. Hence, activities of the 8th Assembly will be benchmarked against the dictate of the Legislative Agenda.

The speaker on behalf of the house congratulated the Governor over victory at the supreme court, the said “let me on behalf of the Delta State House of Assembly congratulates our amiable Governor, His Excellency, Rt. Hon. (Elder) Sheriff Francis Orohwedor Oborevwori, on his resounding victory at the Supreme Court, on Friday, 19th January, 2024.”

He further urged members to continue to prioritise the welfare of their constituents as the nation faces harsh economic condition. “Our people are daily facing hardship never experienced in our corporate existence. I therefore urge all of us to continue to show love to our constituents in our little ways. I thank Members for reaching out to the people during the yuletide. God bless you.”
