Bolt Launches In-App Dash Cam to Boost Safer Rides in Nigeria
Bolt, the global ride-hailing platform, has unveiled a new safety feature for its drivers in Nigeria by transforming smartphones into dashboard cameras (dash cams).
The initiative is in partnership with US-based Driver Technologies and aims to improve both driver and rider security across the country.
According to the company, the app will record both the inside and outside of vehicles, a long-standing request from drivers seeking protection during disputes and insurance claims.
As part of the rollout, Bolt driver partners will enjoy one free month of the premium Driver app, after which they can subscribe at a discounted fee of ₦4,810 ($3.50) per month. All recordings are stored in the cloud for easy access and sharing when required.
“Driver partners regularly tell us that a dash cam can provide them with additional security and peace of mind,” said Osi Oguah, Bolt Nigeria’s General Manager, in an email to The PUNCH. “But buying a device that meets their requirements can be expensive, with drivers citing the cost as the main obstacle.”
The new system also allows drivers to run the app in the background while using the Bolt platform. It offers a picture-in-picture feature, confirming that recording is active without disrupting ride-hailing operations.
Through the Driver Cloud, drivers can securely store, access, and share footage to support insurance claims, customer disputes, or even law enforcement investigations.
“By providing discounted access to premium dashcam functionality, our partnership with Driver Technologies ensures they can access the tools they need to create safer environments for themselves and their passengers,” Oguah added.
Bolt highlighted that this feature complements existing in-app safety tools such as pick-up codes and Trusted Contacts. The company has been making continuous investments in Nigeria and other African markets to strengthen safety for both drivers and riders.
For Driver Technologies, this collaboration represents an expansion into emerging markets, offering IT support and data management services tailored for Nigerian drivers.
Founded in 2013, Bolt now operates in over 600 cities across 50 countries, with more than 4.5 million drivers globally. The company said this Nigerian initiative underscores its commitment to driver welfare and security in Africa, one of its fastest-growing regions.
